The Impact Of Homeschooling | Natalie Mack | Tedx Silver Spring

Reflections from My TEDx Talk

When I first began homeschooling more than two decades ago, I could never have imagined where that decision would lead—or how deeply it would shape my family, my faith, and my purpose. Standing on the red circle to give my TEDx Talk, “The Impact of Homeschooling,” was one of those full-circle moments where I could see how God had woven every season of our homeschool and military life together for good.

I didn’t start out planning to homeschool. In fact, when the idea first came up, I resisted it completely. But God had a way of getting my attention in unexpected places – and it all started one Sunday morning in church.

How It All Began

During that church service years ago, I glanced at my daughter and noticed something that stopped me in my tracks. Despite all my efforts to provide her with the best education and opportunities, something was missing. Connection. I realized that in the midst of schedules and structure, I was losing touch with my child’s heart.

That realization sent me on a journey I never expected. I began researching homeschooling, reading everything I could find, and praying about whether this was truly what God wanted for our family. The more I learned, the more I sensed His quiet “yes.”

So, with fear, faith, and a lot of determination, I made the leap. We transitioned from a private Montessori school to homeschooling, and life as I knew it changed forever.

The Impact of Homeschooling Through Military Life

Our family’s homeschool journey has always been intertwined with our life as a military family. My husband served as a Navy chaplain for 34 years, which meant deployments, relocations, and seasons of uncertainty were part of our rhythm.

Three weeks after 9/11, we moved to Camp Pendleton, stepping into a new chapter marked by both global tension and personal transformation. Homeschooling gave us something the military lifestyle often can’t: stability. It allowed us to keep learning no matter where we lived or what was happening around us.

Each new duty station became an opportunity to explore history, geography, and culture. Cross-country moves turned into living lessons. When other families might have seen disruption, we saw discovery.

Homeschooling allowed me to anchor my children’s hearts while the world around them kept changing. It gave us the flexibility to learn at our own pace, the freedom to explore individual passions, and the space to prioritize faith and family above all else.

Watching My Children Grow

Over the years, homeschooling has given my children the confidence and curiosity to chase their dreams in their own unique ways.

My oldest daughter fell in love with languages after a trip to Ukraine, where she first encountered Russian. That spark led her to study Mandarin in college and travel to China five times. She now leads educational trips for students through Washington, D.C., showing others the power of global connection through learning.

My youngest daughter, on the other hand, had a very different dream of playing soccer. She joined an Italian team while we were stationed overseas and later earned an NCAA Division I soccer scholarship, proving that homeschooled students can thrive in both academics and athletics.

My oldest son took his love of history and justice to American University, where he researched the school’s hidden history of enslavement. His work became a permanent exhibit in the university library – a legacy of truth-telling and reconciliation. He also participated in Model United Nations and developed a passion for international service.

Meanwhile, my youngest son, now a teenager, continues to surprise and inspire me. He’s a licensed youth soccer referee, a Google Scholar for the 4-H Ignite STEM Conference, and a student with an unshakable curiosity about how the world works.

Each of my children’s paths has been different, but they share one thing in common: a love of learning that began at home.

Lessons from a Life of Homeschooling

Homeschooling has taught me more about perseverance, flexibility, and faith than I ever imagined. As a military spouse, I’ve had to balance uncertainty with the intentionality of learning to trust God’s timing even when I couldn’t see the outcome.

Through deployments, transitions, and countless “restarts,” I discovered that education doesn’t have to happen within four walls. It happens in airports, on base housing porches, in libraries, and around the dinner table. It happens in laughter, in service, and in the quiet moments when a child’s eyes light up with understanding.

The most powerful impact of homeschooling isn’t just academic. It’s relational. It’s about knowing your children deeply, walking alongside them in their strengths and struggles, and creating an environment where they can flourish as the individuals God made them to be.

“Let’s Get It Done”

If there’s one phrase that sums up our family’s approach to life and learning, it’s “Let’s get it done.”

That mindset has carried us through deployments, cross-country moves, difficult subjects, and college applications. It means showing up, doing the work, and trusting that faith and effort – together – can overcome any obstacle.

Homeschooling has never been about perfection. It’s about purpose. It’s about seeing each child’s potential and helping them step boldly into it.

The Broader Impact of Homeschooling in My Life

What began as a single step of obedience has rippled outward in ways I could never have imagined. Through my work with HSLDA, Fort Belvoir Home Educators, and the broader military homeschool community, I’ve had the privilege of supporting other families as they embark on their own journeys.

I’ve watched parents find courage, children find their voices, and families rediscover joy in learning together. That’s the impact of homeschooling. It multiplies.

Every family that chooses this path becomes part of a larger story of faith, freedom, and growth.

Looking Back and Looking Forward

When I walked onto that TEDx stage, I carried my family’s story with me: the laughter, the tears, the relocations, the late nights grading papers, and the moments of awe when I realized how far we’d come.

I didn’t plan to homeschool, but I’m so thankful I did. This journey has shaped who I am, who my children have become, and how I now serve others.

Homeschooling has made all the difference for our family, for our faith, and for the generations to come.

“When you invest in your child’s education at home, you’re not just teaching them facts. You’re teaching them faith, resilience, and the power to change the world.”
